Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year, with cooler temperatures and trees in stunning shades of yellow, orange and red. It is the ideal time to head for a crisp walk with your family, to enjoy a picnic or just take a drive, enjoying the beautiful landscapes outside your window. Why is Autumn such a great time to plant trees?
There are a host of reasons why Autumn is the best time of year to plant a Living Urn tree. Here we highlight just a few of the main ones:
Trees focus on root growth in the Autumn: In the latter months of the year, deciduous trees drop their leaves and become dormant. This means they can focus their energy on growing their root system throughout the winter months. In the warmer months, trees have to divide their energy between shoots and leaves as well as their roots, something that they don't have to do in the Autumn. The soil also tends to stay warm once the temperature of the air above ground has cooled, encouraging their roots to grow. These optimal conditions mean your tree will have a robust root system and be ready for strong growth in the Spring.
They require less water: Due to the higher levels of rain and the cooler temperatures, trees require less watering on your part.
They're more tolerant to droughts - If your tree is planted in the Autumn it will be more resistant to heat and drought in the future compared to trees planted in the Summer or Spring. Trees planted in the Autumn get around six to eight months of initial root growth before the heat of the summer sets in.
It's the best temperature for you to plant it - You don't want to be planting trees when it's scorching hot outside or freezing cold. Autumn gives you mild temperatures and better soil conditions that make for much nicer conditions to plant in.
There aren't as many bugs around - You don't want your tree to get eaten by insects and luckily in Autumn there are much fewer bugs about to cause stress to the new plant.

When is too late to plant a tree?
It's best to plant your tree no later than four weeks before the ground freezes or before a freezing cold spell hits in order to let your chance "root in." That being said, the general rule is that as long as the ground isn't frozen you can plant your tree.
Do I need to do anything to prepare my plant for winter?
Over the years trees have built up a resilience and are well adapted to deal with the elements. With that being said, you still need to give your newly planted tree a bit of TLC to help it on its way to becoming self-sufficient. You will need to water your plant weekly from when it's first planted until the ground has frozen over, even once it's dropped its leaves. Be sure to also follow the instructions provided with your Living Urn to mulch properly. This helps to keep the soil around the roots moist and insulated from any rapid increases and decreases of temperature.
